President's Message

January 2012

Dear EWC Members,

As I’m writing this I still have a smile on my face as a result of our lovely holiday party.  It was a wonderful time to connect with over 70 members and their guests, sample outstanding food prepared by the entertainment committee, admire everyone’s holiday attire, and even sing a few Christmas carols.  It was enjoyable to share this occasion with new members as well as members who have been active in the club for many years.  On behalf of the entire club, I want to express our admiration to Eileen Anderson and Rhonda Dorfman and their dedicated committee.  Julie and Jack Mitchener were our cordial hosts, and I believe we left your house in as good a shape as we found it.

As I start my New Year with pork, black eyed peas and collards for my Southern roots, and sauerkraut and potatoes for my husband ‘s Northern roots,  I think back fondly on the wonderful food.  Last month also gave us the opportunity to tour the Western Reserve Historical Society mansions.  We send sincere appreciation to Coyne Quinn for organizing this event.  We marveled at the beautifully decorated Bingham-Hanna and the Hay-McKinney mansions. I know many of us will venture back to the Western Reserve on snowy days when we prefer to be inside. January is for most of us a time to reflect on the past year, recognizing our blessings, thinking ahead to the new year.  Hopefully, it is a time when we don’t just pick New Year’s resolutions, which we break, but use our resolutions as a time to reach out and help others.

With that in mind, I want to remind you of our next wine and cheese in March which will be our major fund raiser for the Cleveland Foodbank as we are starting our planning for this event now.  We set a goal of raising $3,500 to be matched by the generosity of Nestles USA up to $5000. Lately, the newspapers and TV are filled with stories about how dire the hunger needs are in Northeast Ohio.  Hunger is particularly severe for the elderly, families with children, and military veterans.  We ask for donations of new, antique, or vintage items, condo rentals, or gift certificates for services which we bid on at an auction at the wine and cheese.  It is also a great opportunity to put unwanted holiday gifts to good use.  For those of us who attended last year, it was a lot of fun, plus a great way to help our charity.   As we go to press, we are in need of someone to host this event, so please contact Eileen to explore this.  Please contact Kris Gobel with any questions you have about making donations.

I also encourage you to register for our January luncheon at the Viking Store where their chef will show us how to prepare a winter meal and then serve it to us.  This was a popular luncheon last year so we decided to repeat it with a new menu.

In closing, I wish a Happy New Year to all and I hope our paths continue to cross at our up-coming events.

 Fondly,

 Sally Cantor, President
