President's Message
May 2012
Dear EWC Members,
It is hard for me to believe that this is my last letter to you as President of the EWC. My thoughts last summer, when I wrote my first letter to you, were that I would never come up with things to say to you for 10 newsletters. This has been an exciting year to be president of our club. We have continued to see our membership grow and our commitment to giving back to the community remains strong. I have been assisted by a strong and vocal board that has put their stamp of approval on our programming. I will miss our monthly meetings and, hopefully, the new board will move forward without setting our meeting room on fire. I extend my appreciation for your support and for your generosity toward the Cleveland Foodbank. As we go to press, EWC has contributed $5,667! With Nestles USA, Inc.’s promise to match the first $5000 of that, our combined efforts will be presenting The Cleveland Foodbank with a generous total of $10,667 for our year’s efforts. We thank all involved for this outstanding degree of generosity! I look forward to introducing you to the NEW board at our May 10th luncheon. This luncheon will include eating at Michelangelo’s in Little Italy followed by a walking tour of the Lake View Cemetery. The Cemetery has been a place that Clevelanders have gone to walk, experience tranquility, and visit the resting places of leading citizens for many years. We may have missed the masses of daffodils which bloomed in March, but there will be a lot of nature to admire. We will be sure to visit the Wade Chapel with its famous Louis Comfort Tiffany window. Before being installed here in Cleveland, the window won a gold medal during the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, giving it credibility as an important example of Tiffany’s highly-prized ecclesiastical work. Go to the website to preview the beautiful window: http://www.lakeviewcemetery.com/wadechapel.php. And be sure not to miss the monument of James A. Garfield Monument, the final resting place of the 20th President of the United States: http://www.lakeviewcemetery.com/garfield.php. For anyone who isn’t up to walking, it is possible to drive from point to point. Although this is our last newsletter until the summer, many activities will continue throughout the summer. Please check our website for up-dates. Spring would not be complete without our SOS (Slice of Summer) Fling which will take place on June 23 at the home of Jennifer and Eddie Lehner. Our appreciation is extended to our host and hostess in advance. Our hospitality committee has begun planning this event, and if you wish to help, please contact Eileen Anderson, hospitality chairperson. See Page 5. Although my term has ended, I look forward to continued involvement in the Eastside Welcome Club. When I moved here almost 3 years ago, I remember how this club helped me connect with the wonderful individuals who are now my friends. I know the Club will continue to serve this purpose for other newcomers to the area. Thank you for becoming my friends. My good wishes go out to all of you for a safe and happy summer as we begin our Memorial Day Holiday!
Fondly,
Sally Cantor
