President's Message

June 2010

Dear Friends,

What an honor and a privilege it will be to serve you as your Eastside Welcome club president this year. This will be my fourth year in Cleveland and they have been four wonderful years because of this organization and the friends I have made in our group. In today’s world of e mail, Twitter and texting, the “old fashioned” Welcome Club is unique. Hospitality is defined as a cordial or generous reception. Not many cities can boast of a Welcome Club like ours or hospitality like this group. Keep up the good work. We are all ambassadors for the club and I look forward to a great year of welcoming more newcomers to the Cleveland area and showing them what a lovely city we have.

Summer is a beautiful time, so take a moment to enjoy the butterflies and birds visiting your gardens. Our long days give us time to both work and play. Enjoy the Summer Solstice, June 19th, right here in Shaker Heights, with the Shaker Arts and Music Festival. Visit one of the Lake Erie Islands or Mentor Headlands State Park. The Cleveland Metroparks offer everything from horseback riding to golf lessons and are full of shaded trails waiting for you to hike down. We all know how we settle in with indoor activities during the winter, so get outside and enjoy the sunshine…or the raindrops because our summers bring both. Just for your information, The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts “summer will be cooler than normal with below normal rainfall. The hottest periods will be in mid-to late June and mid-to late July.” Being outdoors when the temperature is 55 or greater is my key to surviving the cozy cold of our winters. This summer I hope you will be able to enjoy the wonderful outdoors.

In between work, shuttling children to camps, setting up your new home or tackling one of those home projects, don’t forget to send in your dues for the new year. You can use the form in the newsletter or just put it in the mail to Cindy Oakley, Membership Chair. We operate on a June 1st to May 31st year so make sure you renew your membership today.

The May newsletter you received is the last official newsletter until September so check with your activities chair people to see if your group will continue to meet. Many do, some don’t, but mark your calendars with upcoming events, and get outside to have some fun!
